Masilwax Base 135 is a low molecular weight, low viscosity trimethylsilyl capped methyl hydrogen, dimethyl siloxane copolymer.
Masilwax Base 135 contains silicon hydride groups that will react with terminal unsaturated hydrocarbons in platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation systems. As such, Masilwax Base 135 can be used as a precursor to organ-modified polyorganosiloxanes or as a cross-linking/chain-extending agent in vinyl silicone elastomers.
Masilwax Base 135’s silicon hydride is reactive, with a wide variety of species bearing active protons such as alcohols and carboxylic acids or hydroxyl-containing inorganic surfaces. The silicon hydride is readily reactive to these groups via a condensation reaction, forming covalent linkages to the silicone. Masilwax Base 135 can treat fabrics, paper, wood, and other surfaces for waterproofing or for hydrophobic modification of fillers, silicas, pigments, etc.
Masilwax Base 135’s low viscosity allows it to spread onto surfaces rapidly. It contains a relatively high content of trimethylsilyl groups providing for low surface energy of treated surfaces. It may be added to inorganic materials using mechanical mixing systems such as ribbon blenders, provided they are properly outfitted to work with flammable fluids and properly vented to handle the outgassing of hydrogen generated from the condensation.
